On July 1, 1959, two brothers Jean and Andre Simard started a small roofing contracting company with one kettle and five workers. Today the company has a fleet of thirty trucks, and more than 100 employees. While the two founders of the firm have now retired, the family is still operating the company with second generations of Simards sons Ron and Paul. "We started out doing flat BUR roofing", a company spokesperson said. "Over the years we have expanded our services to include asphalt shingles, tile roofs, metal roofing, steel decking, metal siding and insulated panels." Recognizing the need for continuing standards of practice and quality in the industry, Transcona Roofing became involved with a number of business and industry organizations including the Better Business Bureau, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Roofing Contractors Association of Manitoba, Manitoba Shingling Contractors Association, Midwest Roofing Association, Construction Specifications Canada and the Winnipeg Construction Association. Each of these groups is dedicated to improving business practices and working conditions in industry. "We have three key resources that have helped to make us a success, our loyal employees, our reliable suppliers, and our customers, many of whom have supported us over the years," Ron Simard explained. In the area of suppliers, Transcona Roofing is an approved applicator for IKO industries, Soprema, Firestone, Gentek, Carlisle and Genflex Systems. The company offices are at 992 Dugald Road in Winnipeg, R3J0G7 and can be contacted by telephone (204) 23-3716 or by fax (204) 235-1814.
